Thomas Joseph Shaffer was born on November 24th, 1931. He was the son of John and Anna Shaffer.
He served in the Korean War in 1951. When asked what he remembered most about the War, he always answered “Cold”.
He married the love of his life, Delores Brockman on May 30th, 1959. The couple went on to warm the hearts of all of their family, friends, and neighbors.
Tom spent the majority of his career working as a mechanic for Hyster. Tom used his experience to help friends and family repair their vehicles. Tom was a giving man.
Tom’s second love was gardening and working the Lake County Fair. He and Delores volunteered many years making the Fair a wonderful experience for all that attended.
Tom loved all of his family and friends, and cherished those relationships. During his final years, St. Rita’s staff helped Tom keep his independence while building a true relationship.
Delores passed away on Dec 5th, 2004. Since that time, Tom counted each day he was without her. His heart longed to be with her.
Lou Kalis (Godson) was with him when he passed. Lou was praying for God and Delores to come take Tom away from his suffering. During that prayer, Tom smiled, took his last breath and left our earth. It is Lou’s belief that the smile resulted in being reunited with his love, Delores.
